The train trip was was very nice, 2 1/2 scenic hours in a cabin with 4 Romanian women. We passed several villages that looked as they probably did 100 years ago, very few cars- people walking and carts driven by two horses. The homes were small with large garden areas. One disappointing part of Romania is the trash situation. Garbage is just thrown over the hillside, very sad. There is much care paid to garbage collection in town, the streets and sidewalks are swept regularly and garbage cans are everywhere. Maybe it's just a country life thing?
This town is very small. We took a long walk today around the old walled section. It is full of quaint OLD homes with a river surrounding the town which is surrounded by hills. The oldest part is atop the tallest hill which is where our hotel is located, our best place yet. We are able to cook for ourselves in a cave-like kitchen under our room.
The bells from the church up the lane woke us up last night as a procession of people on their way to Easter Vigil walked by, interesting. It reminded me of Guatemala at Easter, though luckily the bells didn't ring all night long!
We have enjoyed a very casual day. Tomorrow we leave for Sibiu, the 2007 European Cultural City of the Year.
