A Sunny Paradise

Split is extra beautiful in the sunshine! The Adriatic is almost as blue as Bear Lake. We walked down to the yacht club this morning, shedding clothes along the way, it's great to be in summertime. Some of the sailboats are giant-sized and others more normal.
Further on was a museum built by a famous Croat sculptor to exhibit his work. It was a modern-day palace with lovely gardens full of 20th century pieces of art. It was located in a very upscale part of Split, big old homes alongside big new mansions all overlooking the ocean and the islands beyond. Simply breathtaking!
The same artist,Mestrovica, had carved wooden representations of the New Testament in a small chapel on the seaside. It was one of the most delightful churches I have ever seen. We had a nice long walk this morning!
After some yummy minestrone (a great way to use leftovers) for lunch we took the customary siesta and we're back out to enjoy some more sunshine and the sights of this ancient town.
Maps are useless here, just like in Venice. There are so many narrow alleyways that twist and turn without reason with one building built atop an older one that you really can't tell where you are! I'm truly amazed everytime we find our way home. Luckily we are situated very close to the fish market so we can use our noses!
It has rained both nights and cleared during the day, perfect! So far this is our favorite place. A couple of people have asked why we didn't come during the tourist season when the place is totally hopping! It isn't that slow now, plenty of action for us!
Tomorrow we will board a ferry for Hvar where we will probably just put our bags in the left luggage while we look around before we venture on to Korcula for the night and a day. We must head soon to Dubrovnik "the jewel of the Adriatic" where we will catch the plane to London and then Dublin.
